Recap: Boca Raton Architecture Workshop
Luxury Resort Photographer Barry Grossman Instructs Architectural Photography Workshop with Phase One & Capture Integration
Written by Barry Grossman
As a luxury resort photographer, I’ve had the distinct pleasure of experiencing some of the world’s most beautiful interiors and architecture at many resort hotel destinations. A few short months ago, we were thrilled to create photographs of The Boca Raton Resort and Club, a Waldorf Astoria Resort. I had wanted to photograph the resort for years and the creative experience was extraordinary and fulfilling. When I was approached by Phase One and Capture Integration to conduct an architectural photography workshop, I immediately knew where I wanted to host the experience… unquestionably, I wanted the stunning and historic Boca Raton Resort and Club to be our backdrop, our star, and the focus of our architectural photographs.
Built just before the Great Crash at the end of the tycoon era, there’s a sumptuous blend of historic design styles and colors that one doesn’t often see unless in some glorious nook of the Old World. It was like a set from the Great Gatsby manifested before us. Spanish, Moroccan, Gothic, and of course a splash of Deco elements tango to the eye’s delight. With intricate details such as these, the powerhouse IQ3 100mp Trichromatic Phase One system was a hands-down necessity in my mind when I first was hired to shoot the resort.
The technical and creative advantages of the system open up a world of photographic possibilities. In challenging spaces which require extreme dynamic range, the Phase One Trichromatic has the ability to capture images with unrivaled resolution, detail and clarity, a feat which would prove quite laborious, if not impossible with any other camera. Our attending photographers – many for the first time – got to experience the Phase One system, including their state-of-the-art XF medium format body, a beautiful set of lenses designed for it, as well as a technical camera system precisely designed to work with the digital back with interior and exterior architecture photography in mind, built by Cambo Photography. Talented shooters and seasoned professionals in their own right, it was my goal that they each came away inspired, excited to work with the equipment, and took home a real sense of the passion I feel for my work, the respect I have for the subject matter, and a love for the image-making experience. The learning curve of these systems was fast and after a few demonstration sessions, each photographer was off and running with her/his own hands-on experiences. Interspersed throughout a jam-packed shooting schedule, we had several post-production classroom demos which allowed me to showcase how Capture One software is an integral part of my creative workflow. Rounding out the experience were plenty of conversations about the business of interior architectural photography, client interaction discussions, licensing of our work, aesthetics, and quite a bit about what inspires us, as photographic artists.
I’m deeply grateful to the Boca Raton Resort and Club for hosting this event. Thank you so much, Victoria Jones and Lynn Squire. All felt welcomed and accommodated by you and your outstanding staff. This was an incredible opportunity and speaking on behalf of everyone who attended our workshop, you epitomize hospitality, class and professionalism.
Phase One and Capture Integration were essential in making this amazing weekend happen. A lot of thought, planning and care went into crafting a program that would be most beneficial to professional photographers, all of whom shoot interior design and architecture. In addition to Cam and Francis who joined me at the resort and truly supported me all weekend, I need to acknowledge Chris Snipes and Kyra Linnen from Capture Integration, both of whom worked with me tirelessly in conceptualizing and coordinating this event. With partners like these, it became a pleasure and my honor to showcase and share what the best camera in the world can do for interior design and architectural photography.
Lastly, I want to thank the photographers who not only enriched this experience for me, but made it all possible. The energy on set was just what I would have hoped for, and we worked collaboratively and successfully as a team. I’d like to thank each and every one of them for what they brought individually and collectively to the workshop. My goal was to educate about my shooting techniques, share my thought processes each and every step of the way, and impart the passion I have for my work and this beautiful camera. It is my hope that each of us left inspired to create the best photography we can.
