10 Things you need to know: New FUJIFILM GFX50S II
With the substantial success of Fujifilm’s GFX100S this year, we are just now satisfying all back orders and shipments to our customers. The advancements, feature set, size, and price of the GFX100S created a huge demand for a product that changed medium format photographic capture systems. Due to this demand and customer response it was logical for Fujifilm to incorporate their 51.4mp sensor into the updated body and feature set. Here is a quick top ten list that will hopefully answer many of your first questions.
10: What is different about the body?
If you are familiar with the GFX100S, then you know what to expect in the GFX50SII. The body, buttons and dials are all exactly the same. In fact, it was difficult to discern which body was which when we first set them down next to each other. It took a keen eye to see the new, small, and grey model designation underneath the left side GFX logo. Other than this one graphic, the bodies are identical.
However, if you are only familiar with the current GFX50S, you will notice the changes in the above image that are evident. The tell tale hump in the rear the GFX50 is now removed. The removable EVF is not an option in the 50S MKII. This also reduces the footprint of the body slightly. Two of the popular old school manual dials have now been incorporated into the LCD menu system, also slightly reducing size and weight. And of course, the redesigned joystick of the GFX100S.
9: Battery and Charger
In order to reduce the price of the body, there will not be a charger included in the box, same as with the GFX 100S. What is the reasoning? If you already have an XT4, then you already have the proper charger. Why should you pay for another one if you don’t need it? Included in the box is a single battery, USB charging block, and USB C to C cable. You can choose to charge in body, use your existing charger If you have an XT4, or purchase an external dual charger (highly recommended).
Secondly, the battery has also changed to the smaller NP-W235 battery. Yes, it is a bummer if you have 10 existing batteries and need to make the change. However the new smaller battery lasts up to 450 shots given us a longer life than its larger bulkier predecessor. And it’s always in stock at the links below:
8: It comes with a kit Lens?
Yes, introduced with the body is the new FUJINON GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6 Lens. Having a kit lens is not something new to other manufacturers or medium format. It’s just new to the Fujifilm medium format GFX line up. If you want to see how this lens compares to the sharpness of the existing GF32-64mm Lens then you can follow this link below:
Sharpness Test Fujinon GF35-70mm vsGF32-64mm lenses
But let’s take a look at this lens in comparison in other ways.
- It has a new collapsable lens design for a smaller footprint in your bag.
- The aperture ring has been removed from classic GF lens design.
- Height – At 75mm it is 35% smaller
- Weight – At .85lbs it is 55% lighter
- Price – At $995.95 it is 57% less expensive
And here are the specifications:

7: Shipping dates
FUJIFILM GFX50S II products will be subject to a RETAIL SALES EMBARGO until October 21, 2021 at 12:00 A.M. ET
Yeah, not for 7 more weeks……. Seems early to announce the product when the first unit won’t ship until 7 weeks from now. However, Fujifilm is doing a great job at getting back orders filled for the GFX100s today. We should have all GFX 100S back orders shipped and units on the shelf in just a week or two. This will allow time to ramp up production for this same body with the 51mp sensor. So it’s important to get your deposits in on the product now in order to receive it this year.
6: Capture One Pro Support
Capture One support is not available today. However it will be available in the next beta version in a few weeks and will be available well before the shipping dates in October.

4: New improvements over the GFX50S
We have already covered size and weight differences so let’s dig internally and see what is under the hood.
One of the biggest selling features of the Fujifilm Medium Format camera line is that it is head and shoulders better at auto focus and image stability than any other medium format camera. And the GFX50SII does not disappoint in these two areas.
The GFX50S II‘s “in body image stabilization” or IBIS, gives the user an extra whopping 6.5 stops of shutter speed latitude for hand held photography. It uses 5-axis stabilization to crush its other medium format competition for sharp captures at unheard of shutter speeds.
FujiFilm has also incorporated its X-processor 4 engine for faster auto focus readout speeds that are almost twice as fast as those of the original GFX50S. Combined with improved algorithms the auto focus is greatly improved in all modes including face and eye detection.
Built on Fujifilm’s incredibly rich history of color science, there are 19 film mode simulations included in the release. Anyone remember shooting with Velvia, Provia, or Astia and want to go back to those vivid film days? Well now you can.
With the addition of the IBIS, this allows the body to allow pixel shifting to incorporate pixel stitch technology creating 4 times the original resolution resulting in 200mp or 600mb files.
Some added smalller features are improved low light focus, better eye detection, improved AWB, hot swapping of SD cards, lens naming, and bluetooth wireless connectivity.
3: Some questions for FujiFilm
When we look at the all the positives it’s only fair that we also make note of the absence of some features. while some diehard or old school users miss the manual tactile buttons, wheels, or aperture rings that have disappeared, the functionality of the camera does not change. Those functions have just been streamlined. With that said, there are some features that seem to be missed. Here are questions that we will try to get answered for you in the coming days.
- Why not offer 4k video in your 50mp cameras? Especially with the faster sensor read out? Future Firmware update?
- We have contrast detection based auto focus in the GFX50SII. Why not phase detection? Is it a BSI function?
2: Price
$3,999.95
When the GFX50s was introduced it stunned the market at $6,490. Then its big brother came in and stunned it again this year at $6,000 causing the biggest backorder we have ever had of any single medium format camera.
Today the GFX50S II comes in at $3,999.95 for the body and $4,499.95 for the kit with 35-70 zoom lens.
